Ear, Nose, and Throat: Making Emergent Care Routine

Dr. David M. Jakubowicz, Chairman, ENT, examining Pediatric ENT patient, Karen Torres.
The Department of Otolaryngology’s strength is derived from its world-class physicians. Its Chairman, Dr. Jakubowicz, is proud of the outstanding staff he has assembled. “Increasingly, ENT physicians who have a choice to practice anywhere choose to serve the community at Bronx Lebanon.”

Dr. Walter M. Ralph brings his outstanding surgical skills to the patients of the South Bronx. Dr. Srinivasan Krishna, one of the few fellowship-trained facial plastic surgeons in the Bronx, brings his ability to reconstruct and modify tissue to improve appearance and function.

The department’s newest physician, Dr. Radoslav Toshkoff, brings his years of surgical experience, coupled with recent training at Memorial Sloan Kettering and St. Barnabas Medical Center, to improve the lives of patients.

All physicians are committed to provide prompt emergency care whether the patient arrives at 3PM or 3AM.

Parents seeking emergent care for their children should take comfort that the Otolaryngology Department has grown into the largest provider of pediatric surgical services at Bronx Lebanon.

One of Dr. Jakubowicz’ initial goals “was to place children with ear, nose, and throat issues first.”

Through the use of a song to calm a crying child’s fears, crayons to lessen the stress of the encounter, medicine to calm a cough, or a scalpel when surgery is required, Dr. Jakubowicz and the ENT team are achieving this goal.  The rapid growth and success of Bronx-Lebanon’s Otolaryngology (ENT) Department derives from its focus on comprehensive and com-passionate care, with a human touch.
No place tests this focus more than the ER. The emergent patient, fearful of both the disease process and its treatment, often requires special care to guide them through to recovery.

To the ENT physician, the emergency may consist of simple infections, such as a bead in the ear, to complex ones, including allergic reactions or tumors that may block the ability to breathe or speak. To the patient and family, each of these is equally distressing.

“Our ENT staff takes pride in making our patients comfortable as we utilize the available tools to assess the situation quickly, express the findings to the patient and family, and come up with a plan that allows for a quick return to normalcy,” stated Dr. David M. Jakubowicz, Chairman, Ear, Nose, and Throat.

Frequently, ENT staff is called upon to assist the ER with airway issues that, if not quickly resolved, may lead to permanent injury or death. The ENT staff takes pride in being skilled in both medical and surgical airway management, and use the least invasive means to assure a safe return to function.

This skill in airway management is increasingly recognized by the New York City EMS units, as evidenced by the more complex critically ill patients that they are bringing to Bronx-Lebanon.

“We now provide the highest quality ENT care and our success is measured by the comfort, compassion, and healing we bring to patients arriving through our doors and those of our ER.”
